The Election Commission (EC) will take a decision on the legitimacy dispute in the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) after the rival factions - one led by party chairman Upendra Yadav and the other by Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar - failed to settle the row mutually.
EC commissioners held a discussion with the leaders of the rival factions Sunday, but failed to convince them to decide the issue mutually. Leaders of both factions claimed they represented the MJF officially.
Talking to reporters after the discussion at the EC, both Gachchhadar and MJF co-chairman J.P Gupta, who led the delegation of Yadav faction, ruled out the possibility of mutual understanding.
EC commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung said the EC would now decide the MJF legitimacy row. Gachchhadar faction had recently submitted signatures of 19 central committee members, a majority in the 35-member central committee while Yadav faction has said the central committee has 42 members, claiming
majority on its side.
As per the regulations, legitimacy issues are decided by the EC on the basis of majority in the concerned party's central committee. MJF saw a vertical split after internal differences over the issue of joining the UML-led coalition government.
Both Gachchhadar and Yadav wanted to lead the party in the present coalition. Yadav had terminated the party membership of Gachchhadar along with some of his supporters citing the decision of the central committee on June 05 after the latter joined the government.
Gachchhadar faction insists that the decision was illegitimate saying Yadav does not have majority in the central working committee.
The MJF feud disrupted the parliamentary debate on the government's policies and programmes Saturday. EC is expected to give a decision on the legitimacy of the party Sunday. nepalnews.com
