The Ministry of Commerce and Supplies has given its nod to a joint proposal forwarded by Salt Trading Corporation and National Trading Limited (NTL) to increase market price of sugar to Rs 61 per kg.

The ministry complied with the proposal to raise the price of sugar being sold by government entities, from Rs 53 per kg to Rs 61 per kg for consumers and Rs 59.50 per kg for dealers, it is understood.

Consumers are compelled to fork out far greater sum to buy sugar from private sector. Owing to poor distribution mechanism, customers are being charged as much as Rs 71 for a kg of sugar, which is Rs 18 higher than the government-fixed price.

STC and NTL had jointly forwarded the proposal for the new prices for newly imported sugar from India, citing rising procurement price.

With one percent customs facility, the SCT recently imported 2,500 tons of sugar from India. The government has decided to import 50,000 tons of sugar at one percent customs to rein the price of sugar, which has been witnessing steep increment due to the augmenting dominance of private players in sugar trading. nepalnews.com
