Shaman couple held for killing man under pretext of treating in Gulmi

A couple has been arrested on the charge of killing a man by stamping him with a hot iron bar, plastic pipe, and a steel strainer under the pretext of curing his back pain in Malika Rural Municipality-6 of Gulmi district, on Wednesday.

The arrestees have been identified as Ram Prasad Shrestha (38) and his wife Shantila Shrestha (36), the residents of Okhreni Tindhara in Resunga-1.

The deceased has been identified as Ram Bahadur Kumal (64) of Darlamchaur area in Ishma Rural Mujniucipality-3 in the district. 

Shrestha had filed a complaint with police stating that unidentified persons were making noises in his house, on Wednesday, according to Gulmi District Police Office (DPO). Acting on the complaint, a team of security personal deployed from the DPO reached the site where they found Kumal dead and his son Hum Bahadur Mukhiya (34) injured. 

During the investigation, police found that Kumal had come to Shrestha’s home to get shamanic treatment for the back pain he had been suffering from. Police found that the Shrestha couple who claimed to be shaman heated an iron bar, plastic pipe, and steel strainer and stamped Kumal, who reportedly died from the treatment. 

Previously, Shrestha had also injured Topala Damai of Bhuwanpani in Resunga-5 under the pretext of treating him through shamanic rituals, police informed and added that Damai has been receiving treatment at a health institution. 

It has come to light that Shrestha had lodged a false complaint to protect himself from the murder charge. 

Meanwhile, the investigation into the incident is underway, said police.
