KATHMANDU: The Industry, Commerce, Labor, and Consumer Rights Committee of the House of Representatives has directed the government to arrange for the smooth distribution of chemical fertilizers.

In a meeting held at Singha Durbar on Sunday, the committee instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure fertilizer availability to farmers without shortage, under the supervision of the respective Chief District Officers and local representatives.

The committee also urged local governments to establish fertilizer storage facilities to guarantee easy and accessible supply based on local demand.

To ensure consistent and quality fertilizer supply and distribution, the committee asked the government to consider increasing the import quota for chemical fertilizers by Salt Trading Corporation Limited.

Based on an analysis of institutional capacity and current import and distribution status, the committees directed the Ministries of Industry and Agriculture to review and adjust fertilizer quotas accordingly.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Ramnath Adhikari emphasized the importance of timely fertilizer availability for crop production and said efforts are underway to deliver fertilizers when farmers need them. However, he noted the current situation does not allow an increase in quotas and suggested the need for a dedicated institution for fertilizer procurement.

Committee members stressed the need for a long-term solution to the recurring fertilizer shortage problem faced by farmers every year.
