Bird flu has been detected in Kathmandu again. The flu was discovered in two places in Kirtipur and one place in Chandragiri on Monday.
The Department of Livestock Services has already sent a technical team this morning to cull 800 turkeys and disinfect the place in the initial phase. After the department got information that turkeys were dying in an unnatural manner in the area it collected some samples and forwarded them to the Central Veterinary Laboratory.
After a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was conducted on the samples it was ascertained that the turkeys were infected with bird flu.
The Department of Livestock Services has said that once the birds have been culled and the area disinfected it will release a detailed statement this evening. Prior to this too the flu was detected in Tarakaeshwor and some other areas.
Bird flu has been detected in Tarakeshwor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, bird flu has been confirmed through real-time PCR testing of turkey and duck samples being bred by local farmers of Tarakeshwor Municipality-7, Sangle Khola Futung in Kathmandu.
To prevent the spread of the flu, all the domestic birds and other possible contagious items have been destroyed by mobilising the agencies related to animal service, said the ministry.
As stated in a press release from the ministry, 1,865 ducks, 622 bales, 32 chickens, 25 turkeys, 542 unit od eggs and 75 kg of grains were destroyed.
