KATHMANDU: Experts warn of a high risk of heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides across Nepal during this year’s monsoon season, which may arrive earlier than usual.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology forecasts above-average rainfall from 18 Jestha to 14 Ashoja, particularly in eastern Karnali, northern Lumbini, and most parts of Gandaki provinces.

With the monsoon expected to bring active rain spells followed by possible drought, officials urge the government to begin preparedness efforts immediately. Last year’s monsoon caused the deaths of 351 people in landslides and 97 in floods, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance.

“This year’s early warning is a preparation siren for the government and the public,” said Kamal Ram Joshi, Director General of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. “Attention must be focused especially on Karnali, Lumbini, and Gandaki to prevent human loss and damage.”
The South Asian monsoon began on May 13, earlier than average, raising expectations that Nepal could see monsoon rains ahead of the usual mid-June arrival. However, precise timing remains uncertain.
Monsoon winds carry moisture from the Indian Ocean, bringing rain essential for the region but also posing significant disaster risks. Authorities are urged to enhance monitoring and response plans to safeguard communities during the coming months.
