The highly anticipated film Dukhi Aatma, which tackles the often-overlooked topic of sexual health, has sparked conversations since the release of its teaser and trailer.
Directed by Dipendra Lama, the movie boldly addresses this taboo subject in Nepali cinema, pushing the boundaries of conventional discourse.
Set to hit theaters nationwide on Falgun 2, coinciding with Valentine’s Day, the film’s press meet featured actors Dayahang Rai and Aanchal Sharma, who shared their thoughts on being part of such a groundbreaking project.
Dayahang highlighted that India confronted similar topics over 40 years ago and emphasized the importance of discussing sexual health openly.
“Sex is a personal matter, but it is also a public concern. We knew there would be mixed reactions, but we decided to take the plunge,” he explained.
He further stressed that talking about sex is an essential aspect of education, adding, “This subject needs to be discussed and understood.” Acknowledging that his films are often family-friendly, he encouraged viewers to watch Dukhi Aatma with an open mind.
“We don’t openly talk about sexual health, but it’s something we need to. While I wouldn’t share my own experiences, this conversation is necessary,” he said.
Aanchal, on the other hand, admitted she was initially unsure about how the audience would react to her role but chose to embrace it because of its significance.
“Why is it 18+? Just like certain subjects are taught at the right age, sexual education should also come at the right time,” she noted. She encouraged people to consult professionals without hesitation, stating, “There is a taboo, but we need to normalize such discussions.”
Presented by Himal Kadarla, Dukhi Aatma stars Anup Bikram Shahi and Buddhi Tamang, with the story by Executive Producer Sudip Dhakal.
