India’s podcasting scene is in turmoil as popular YouTubers Ranveer Allahbadia and Samay Raina face legal issues over obscene remarks made on their podcast India’s Got Lattent. The two have been booked in a new FIR in Mumbai for allegedly insulting parents and using derogatory language. The case has now been handed over to the Maharashtra Cyber Police, and a total of 30 guests who have appeared on the show since its inception are now implicated.
Public outrage is growing, with the All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) calling on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to cancel the show, arguing that its content misguides the youth. On Tuesday morning, a five-member police squad raided Ranveer Allahbadia’s house in Versova, Mumbai. Another complaint has also been filed against him in Indore. The situation escalated when YouTube removed the controversial episode at the request of the National Human Rights Commission. The scandal has now reached India’s Parliament, where Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi raised the issue in the IT Committee, demanding immediate action and stricter guidelines to prevent such content from spreading.
Chaturvedi condemned the show, stating, “Using abusive language under the guise of comedy is not acceptable. Even leading politicians—who have been felicitated by the Prime Minister—have appeared on Allahbadia’s platform. This is completely irresponsible behavior.” The episode in question, which aired on February 8, sparked widespread outrage due to offensive comments about parents and women. The show, known for its bold and unapologetic humor, boasts over 7.3 million global subscribers. However, this time, their jokes went too far, resulting in massive backlash.
Raina’s podcast is one of India’s most-watched, with each episode drawing over 20 million views. The format features rotating judges and gives contestants 90 seconds to perform. The fallout from this incident is far from over. Singer B Praak publicly declined an invitation to appear on Allahbadia’s podcast, criticizing the show’s offensive content. In an Instagram post, he wrote: “I was invited to come on BeerBiceps, but I have canceled it. Why? Because of their vile mindset. The language used on Raina’s show has no place in our culture.”
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has also weighed in, saying, “I’ve heard about the controversy, but I haven’t seen the show personally. However, I’ve been told that it was done in a very crass way, which is absolutely not acceptable. Freedom of speech is a right, but it should not invade other people’s space.”
With mounting pressure, legal challenges, and government intervention, India’s Got Lattent is now facing an uncertain future. Will the show survive this scandal, or is a nationwide ban on the horizon? Stay tuned!
