KATHMANDU: Amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the 72nd edition of the Miss World pageant commenced on Saturday in Hyderabad, the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana.
The opening ceremony, which marked the beginning of the month-long competition, was highly engaging. Members from 110 countries introduced themselves through performances that reflected their unique cultural identities.
Miss Nepal Srichchha Pradhan, whose entry was followed by Nepal’s national flag — sun and moon symbols — walking with her, proudly represented herself as Nepali by wearing Nepali traditional dress, which reflected Nepal’s rich tradition.
A grand opening event was held in the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium of Hyderabad, presided over by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. Security for the venue had been heavily boosted in light of the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
India had already organized the Miss World 2024 contest in Mumbai. The Telangana government sees this edition as a global platform to promote the state’s culture and tourism.
Before the opening event, reports emerged that police had arrested Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals who were allegedly residing in the area illegally.
Before her departure to India, Srichchha expressed excitement about her participation in the competition. For the “Beauty with a Purpose” category, she is presenting an initiative titled “Panch Pranali.”
