KATHMANDU: Fagu Poornima, also known as Holi, the lively festival of colors, is being celebrated with great zeal in the Terai region today.
This festival, marking the arrival of spring and the harvest season, is often called the spring festival. A central tradition of Holi, Holika Dahan, represents the victory of good over evil, and is observed by lighting bonfires and performing a special Puja to ward off evil spirits.
In the Terai, people are enjoying the festivities by joyfully smearing each other with vibrant colors, including red vermilion powder (Abir). Holi is seen as a time to promote social unity and harmony.
Among Nepal’s numerous cultural celebrations, Fagu Poornima holds a unique place, with people of all ages enthusiastically taking part.
At the same time, the sale and prices of fruits and essential goods have risen in the Terai as the festival continues.
