KATHMANDU: The Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a yellow alert for 22 districts, warning of a moderate risk of sudden flooding in small rivers due to increasing rainfall.
The alert applies to districts such as Tanahun, Surkhet, Dailekh, Syangja, Arghakhanchi, Palpa, Kapilvastu, Parbat, Kaski, Rupandehi, Chitwan, Gulmi, and Makwanpur, where river levels are expected to rise significantly. Other districts under alert include Nawalparasi (East and West), Parsa, Baitadi, Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur), Kavrepalanchok, Ilam, and Baraa.
While major rivers such as the Karnali, Mahakali, and their key tributaries, along with Kamala, Bagmati, Eastern and Western Rapti, and Babai are likely to remain below danger levels, their water levels will continue to rise. Meanwhile, the Koshi, Narayani, and Kankai rivers and their major tributaries may fluctuate around the alert level, requiring close attention in nearby communities.
The bulletin also mentions a general caution for 26 other districts, including Jhapa, Sankhuwasabha, Panchthar, Taplejung, Solukhumbu, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Ramechhap, Dolakha, Sindhupalchok, and Nuwakot. These areas could experience a noticeable rise in small river flows, with a minor risk of flash floods.
Other districts under general watch include Dhading, Dang, Pyuthan, Jajarkot, Darchula, Kalikot, Achham, Rukum (East and West), Bajhang, Doti, Dadeldhura, and Kailali, where localized rainfall may cause river surges.
The Flood Forecast Division has urged residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas in all these districts to maintain high vigilance and avoid risky activities along riversides.
