KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress Central Committee member and head of the party’s Education Department, Nain Singh Mahar, has expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations with protesting teachers will yield a concrete outcome within the next couple of days.

Speaking at a discussion with leaders of affiliated and sister organizations at the party headquarters in Sanepa, Mahar stated that the government and political parties are holding serious consultations with concerned stakeholders to address the demands of the teachers’ federation. He emphasized that efforts are underway to ensure the talks are successful in a way that does not disrupt student enrollment for the new academic session or the upcoming Grade 12 exams.

“The dialogue with the stakeholders has been constructive, and I am hopeful that a resolution will be reached very soon,” said Mahar, pointing to the growing pressure caused by the teachers’ movement. The protest, which began on Chaitra 20 (April 2), has already led to the suspension of regular school activities and could jeopardize the scheduled national examinations if not resolved quickly.

He called on the government to take the teachers’ concerns seriously. “Teachers have been demonstrating continuously since Chaitra 20. This has impacted hundreds of thousands of students. Talks between the teachers and the government are progressing positively, and a swift conclusion is essential,” he said. “It’s not enough for talks to be positive—they must also lead to results.”
