KATHMANDU: Lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) continued their protest in the House of Representatives on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and the formation of a high-level parliamentary probe into the visit visa scandal.
The ongoing protest has entered its 26th day. Despite the disruption, Speaker Devraj Ghimire pushed ahead with House proceedings, ignoring the opposition’s obstruction. This prompted the RPP to walk out of the chamber in protest, while RSP lawmakers remained inside and encircled the well of the House.
Earlier in the session, RSP MP Ashim Shah and RPP’s Dhawal Shamsher Rana addressed the House, reiterating their demands. However, Speaker Ghimire proceeded with deliberations on the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, overriding the opposition’s objection.
Meanwhile, ruling parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have backed Lekhak, resisting calls for his resignation. The Maoist Centre, the main opposition, has also retreated from its earlier stance and is no longer participating in the protest, effectively isolating RSP and RPP in their campaign for accountability.
