DHARAN: Tensions have risen in Dharan amid an escalating dispute between Mayor Harka Sampang and Deputy Mayor Aindra Bikram Begha.

The conflict intensified after Begha stopped payments related to labor donation bills submitted through a consumer committee, prompting supporters of Mayor Sampang to protest and confront the deputy mayor, which angered Maoist activists allied with Begha.

On Tuesday, both factions confronted each other, leading to the deployment of a large contingent of Armed Police Force and Nepal Police to maintain peace.

The dispute revolves around labor donation work in Ward No. 16, where Begha halted payments citing concerns over illegal clearances and her inability to oversee the projects properly.

Mayor Sampang defended the work, explaining it was urgent flood relief aimed at protecting the homes of affected residents.
