KATHMANDU: Shyam Ghimire, the Chief Whip of the Nepali Congress (NC), has apologized in Parliament for his controversial remarks.

In today’s session, Ghimire expressed regret over his comments made three days ago, where he suggested that sex businesses should be legalized in Nepal.

At the start of the House of Representatives meeting, Ghimire requested to speak. Once given the floor by the Speaker, he clarified that the views he expressed were his personal opinion and not the official position of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party.

During a special session of Parliament, Ghimire had publicly advocated for the legalization of sex businesses, a statement that received widespread criticism both within and outside Parliament, including from his own party.

In today’s address, Ghimire reiterated that his comments were personal and not a reflection of the party’s stance. He apologized for any harm his statement may have caused.

“The views I shared were my personal opinions, expressed in a specific context as an MP. They do not represent the official position of the Nepali Congress or its parliamentary party. If my remarks have caused any offense to the members of Parliament or the public, I offer my sincere apology,” Ghimire said.
