KATHMANDU: Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire held a meeting with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leaders on Friday morning in a last-minute effort to ensure that today’s Parliament session proceeds without obstruction.
The Speaker met with RSP’s acting president DP Aryal and chief whip Santosh Pariyar before the House convenes at 11 AM. The meeting comes as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to respond to lawmakers’ questions under the “Prime Minister–MPs Q&A” segment, which tops today’s agenda.
The RSP has been continuously obstructing House proceedings, demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over the controversial visit visa scam. The party has also called for the formation of a high-level probe committee to investigate the matter, citing serious irregularities and political protection in the issuance of visit visas.
According to sources close to the Speaker’s Secretariat, Ghimire urged the RSP leaders to allow the Prime Minister to answer the House, calling it a universally practiced parliamentary norm and an essential aspect of accountability.
It remains to be seen whether the RSP will heed the Speaker’s request and allow the Prime Minister to address the House without disruption. The session is expected to begin at 11 AM.
