KATHMANDU: The Promotion Committee, in a meeting held on Thursday, recommended DIG Ganesh Thada Magar for promotion to the vacant post of Additional Inspector General (AIG) in the Armed Police Force (APF).
This move positions Thada Magar as a strong contender for future APF leadership, with a potential path to become Inspector General after three years.
The APF currently has three AIG positions. One is vacant following the retirement of AIG Chandra Prakash Gautam on April 15, while AIGs Narayan Dutta Paudel and Bhansi Raj Dahal continue in service.
Incumbent IG Raju Aryal will retire on April 17, 2026, with either Paudel or Dahal expected to succeed him for a 22-month term. Thada Magar, if promoted, is likely to take over afterward.
DIGs Kamal Giri, Kul Bahadur Nembang, and Shambhu Subedi, who were appointed alongside Thada Magar, face retirement on January 7, 2026, unless promoted. Their tenure was extended by one year earlier this January.
