INDIA: The Indian government has officially blocked access to The Wire, a prominent independent news portal, across the country.
This action is being taken under the orders of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which has cited reasons relating to national security and public order.
In a strong statement, The Wire condemned the move as an outright violation of the Indian Constitution’s guarantee of freedom of the press. The news organization has vowed to take all necessary steps to challenge this “arbitrary and inexplicable” decision.
“At a critical juncture when India requires rational, fair, and truthful sources of news and information, this ban is an unjustified attack on free expression,” The Wire stated in a public communication directed at its readers.
The organization has emphasized that it will not be deterred by this censorship and remains steadfast in its mission to deliver accurate news to its readership.
“We are taking all necessary steps to challenge this arbitrary move,” the statement continued. “Your support has kept our work going for the past 10 years, and we are counting on all of us standing together at this time.”
This latest development has sparked concerns over the state of press freedom in India, with many media organizations and advocacy groups calling the ban an affront to journalistic independence and the country’s democratic values.
As of now, The Wire is exploring legal avenues to reverse the ban and continue its operations. In the meantime, it is calling on its readers and supporters to stand in solidarity with the publication and its mission to provide factual and unbiased reporting.
