KATHMANDU: Recent localized rainfall has led to a drop in temperatures across parts of Nepal, particularly in the eastern region.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division reported that the east has seen notable cooling over the past two days due to increased precipitation.

While much of western Nepal remains hot, a gradual decline in temperatures is expected. Rain has been observed in several districts, including Kathmandu Valley, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Khotang, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Dolakha, Kavre, Nuwakot, Gorkha, and Makawanpur. This pattern is likely to continue through Thursday and Friday, contributing to further cooling.

Despite the rainfall, afternoon temperatures may still rise, especially in areas not receiving consistent rain. The Division noted that scattered showers with thunder and lightning have occurred in Koshi and Bagmati Provinces, with isolated heavy rain.

As the weather system shifts southwest, more areas may see rain and thunderstorms. Light rain was also recorded in parts of Gandaki and Sudurpaschim Provinces, and the chances of further showers remain high due to increasing cloud cover.

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the monsoon. Though it entered eastern Nepal about 15 days early, it temporarily retreated toward East Asia.

Typically, the monsoon begins around June 13. This year’s early entry into the east was unusual, and its full advancement across the country is still pending confirmation.
