KATHMANDU: The Gurung community is marking Tamu Lhosar today, saying goodbye to the previous year.
In the Gurung language, the word ‘Lho’ refers to a year or age, while ‘Sar’ means change.
The occasion is celebrated with feasts, cultural performances, and traditional practices.
Tamu Lhosar is also believed to be associated with the sun's rays.
The festival takes place on the 15th of Poush in the Nepali calendar, when the first sunlight reaches the Gurung settlements in areas such as Lamjung, Gorkha, Tanahun, Syangja, Manang, Kaski, and Parbat.
The Tamang community observes a similar celebration in the month of Magh, and the Sherpa community celebrates it in Falgun.
In recognition of Tamu Lhosar, the government has declared a public holiday.
