All the five political parties that are active in the area have united against the Kaligandaki River Diversion Project. As soon as the office of the Kaligandaki-Tinau Diversion Multipurpose Project was set up the parties have mentioned that their attention has been drawn towards that and have appealed to locals to be ready to launch a protest against the project.
Nepali Congress, CPN UML, CPN (Maoist Centre), Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal, and Rastriya Janamorcha have issued a joint statement mentioning that establishing the office even when the project was against national interest shows the ill-intentions of the concerned people.
Acting President of NC in Syangja, Buddhi Bahadur Rana, said that all the five political parties in Syangja are against the project as it poses a danger to the environment and culture of the region as well as the social and natural heritage. He added that the project is being taken forward without the consultations of the locals, which is directly against the principle of federalism.
Rana stated that the project had been initiated to benefit a few individuals.
Meanwhile, District Coordinator of CPN (Maoist Centre), Shailendra Ghimire, said construction of the project will displace many families from their ancestral homes. He added the project will also affect the fertility of the agricultural land in the vicinity.
