Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has vowed all laws under the ministry would be aligned with federal set up in a year.

Addressing a programme organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the Federation of Nepal Indigenous Journalists (FONIJ) in the federal capital on Sunday, Minister Gurung viewed loktantra could not be reinforced with the laws that were made in the panchayat era.

The Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) is run with the laws made in the King Mahendra's regime, he reminded, adding there are old laws guiding the Gorkhapatra Corporation, Nepal Television and Postal Service.

He reiterated that all such laws would be revised within a year to suit the federal republic. Efforts are on at parliament to pass the Media Council Bill at the earliest, Gurung informed.

The Minister lauded the role played by FONIJ for the establishment of loktantra. It is imperative to make review on the benefits we reaped from the federal structure, according to him.

He underlined the need for reinforcing the federal system rather than jettisoning it.

On the occasion, Chairman of Press Council Nepal, Balkrishna Basnet, said time has come to exclusively define social networks, journalists and media.

FNJ Chairman Bipul Pokhrel said it is also responsibility of the government to make journalists accountable.

FONIJ Chairman Gajurdhan Rai informed his organization was working for inclusive media.

On the occasion, Pushpa Hari Kyampa Rai (Nepal Television) and Bijay Ratna Tuladhar (online) were conferred on the FONIJ National Journalism Honour. Also honoured on the occasion was Lauwa Agrasan, who has been doing journalism in mother language- Tharu.

For the first time, FONIJ Malaysia award was provided to Rekhiram Ranamagar and Punam Mahato.

For the year, 2081, Satendra Jabegu (online), Bishnu Tamang (print) and Khima Gurung (radio) were conferred on the FONIJ National Journalism Award.
