Commemorating the contribution of the first elected Prime Minister Vishweshwar Prasad Koirala, the 40th Memorial Day is being celebrated today with various programs across the country.
Koirala, who fought hard for the establishment of democracy in Nepal, died on 6th July 2039. He has also made significant contributions in the field of Nepali literature. Koirala was born on August 24, 1971. He became the first elected Prime Minister in May 2016 after the parliamentary elections of 2015.
One and a half dozen works of Koirala, the pioneer of psychological realism in Nepali literature, have been published. His six novels have been published namely 'Tin Ghumti', 'Modi Ain', 'Hitler and Jew', 'Sumnima', 'Narendradai' and 'Bab, U Ama a Son'. Similarly, two collections of stories 'Shwet Bhairavi' and 'Doshi Chashma', 'Bishweshwar Prasad Koiralaka Katha and Kavita' edited by Hariprasad Sharma, have been published.
'Autobiography' based on a conversation with Senior Advocate Ganeshraj Sharma, 'Jail Journal' based on his daily life in Sundarijal Prison, 'Pheri Sundarijal', a daily written after he was taken directly from Tribhuvan International Airport to Sundarijal Prison after returning home with the policy of national unity and reconciliation on 16th December 2033 It has depicted the reality of the political situation at that time.
Koirala's essay on 'progressiveness in literature' has also been published in Sisar magazine edited by Gyannishta Gyawali.
Koirala, who led the Congress for a long period of his life and became the first elected Prime Minister after the party won two-thirds majority in the 2015 general elections, provided political leadership for the establishment of nationalism, democracy and socialism in Nepal. During his prime ministership, he pushed forward the land reform program to abolish birta and 'land should belong to tillers by the power of the Royal Nepali Army, Koirala and other leaders were imprisoned in Singha Darbar.
A month later, the official residence of the head of the army's Sundarijal Arsenal was surrounded by a wall, leader Koirala, first speaker of Parliament Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, leader Ganeshman Singh and other ministers were imprisoned in the Sundarijal jail.
Koirala, who was released from prison for health examination in 2025, lived in exile in India for eight years. After analyzing that the nationalism was weakened while in exile in India and fighting for the restoration of democracy, he returned to his country with the policy of national unity and reconciliation on 16 January 2033 regardless of the eight death cases. The policy of reconciliation adopted by him is equally relevant in the country's politics even today.
Koirala, a thinker and practitioner of democratic socialism, contributed to bring Nepali literature to its peak through literature by giving independent thought, dimension, tradition and style. The Sundarijal Jail, where the Prime Minister, Speaker of Parliament and Ministers of the first elected government were imprisoned, was inaugurated as BP Museum on 24 August 2061. The museum, which was made to be seen by collecting the important things of BP's life, was damaged by the earthquake on 12th Baisakh 2072 and is currently being rebuilt.
In addition to the important materials of BP's life, the tanker used in the 2007 revolution, the plane of Nepal Air Service Corporation, which was hijacked by the Congress to raise funds for the revolution in 2029, are also kept in the museum. On the occasion of BP Memorial Day, Congress, fraternal organizations and BP Museum Committee will hold various programs across the country, Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel of the party office informed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
