Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand and Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun visited Sainik Manch Tundikhel and observed the various activities and games of horses and dogs presented by the army.
The event featured a variety of interesting horse riding programs including rider passes, banner displays, horse races, bicycle races, show-jumps, drill rides, cross-tent pegging, horse fighting jumping and riding, musical rides, cross country jump, Hungarian post, group jump, etc.
In the program, various exciting activities and art by trained dogs were also exhibited. Acting Chief Justice, Speaker, Ministers, high-ranking officials of the Government of Nepal, heads of constitutional bodies, heads of security organs, military comrades in Nepal, and dignitaries of various sectors of the society were present at Tundikhel to observe the procession.
'Ghode Jatra' is celebrated in Tundikhel every year on the day of Krishna Aunsi in Chaitra. The main event was broadcast live on Nepal Television and other media.
According to popular belief, the procession is said to have been started in connection with a monster called Gurumapa, who lives in a tree in the east-south of Tundikhel and scared the children of the city. It is said that the horse procession is being organized in line with the idea of trampling the soul of Gurumapa with the hoof of a horse. In order to maintain the tradition of horse riding and preserve the culture, the army has been organizing exhibitions of various skillful and exciting activities of horses and dogs on the day of horse riding.
