KMC plans to clear all wastes within a week

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has stated that it will take at least a week to collect all the wastes that have piled up for over two weeks in 18 local levels of Kathmandu district.

The meeting of Kathmandu Chief District Officer Kali Prasad Rijal, Director General of Roads Department and Senior Superintendent of Police under the coordination of KMC Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya held on Tuesday decided to collect the waste.

Mayor Shakya said that KMC was not merely responsible for the waste management but the entire community. He hoped for a positive solution. The waste has started accumulating in many places in KMC.

For the past 18 days, the wastes have not been collected citing that the road to the Sisdol-based landfill site had been damaged due to incessant rain.

Hari Kumar Shrestha, chief of the KMC's Department of Environment said that garbage management has started from today as the road department will immediately repair the road leading to Sisdol and solve the problems of the locals of Sisdol.

The Department of Environment has informed that about 15,000 metric tons of garbage have been accumulated due to the inability to pick up garbage for a long time. The party had issued a public notice on July 13 urging the city dwellers not to take out garbage outside their houses. Garbage management has started two weeks after the information was made public. A landfill site with a capacity of only two years of waste management was constructed in Sisdol in 2062 BS.

Every day, 1,200 metric tons of garbage is being managed in Sisdol from the Kathmandu Valley. Out of this, only 500 metric tons of garbage from KMC is released. At least 200 vehicles, both private and private, are bringing garbage daily.

A long-term waste management site has been constructed at Bancharedanda, about two kilometres away from Sisdol, where garbage is currently being managed. The long-term landfill site currently under construction is located on the border of Nuwakot and Dhading. About 75 per cent of the garbage emitted daily from Kathmandu Valley is being managed in Sisdol.
