Ministry of Home Affairs: Increasing CCTV effectiveness

Out of 165 CCTV cameras installed in collaboration with Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Nepal Police, 158 are currently operational. 7 of the installed ones were not used during the road expansion. According to Valley Police Office Ranipokhari, out of 3,231 CCTV cameras in the valley, 1,051 are monitored from the visual control room.

The police have provided the scenes related to the incident to solve the problem. There are requests from the police about vehicle accidents, missing items, theft, robbery, missing vehicles, and missing people.

According to the police, 61 percent of the complaints received by the police have been resolved with the visuals provided in this way.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a procedure for the installation and operation of CCTV cameras.

The procedure states that CCTV should not be placed in hotel rooms, toilets, changing rooms, and cameras should not be installed in a way that violates the human rights of individuals or affects their right to walk freely. It is mentioned in the procedure that the footage obtained from this should be stored for 3 months and the archived footage should be kept confidential.
