The Kathmandu Metropolitan City Office has said that schools must complete their examinations by June 3. The KMC has directed all schools within Kathmandu valley to utilise necessary procedures and resources and complete the exams for academic year 2077 within the stipulated date.

The directive was issued by Ram Prasad Subedi, Education Officer of KMC, through a statement issued on Sunday.

The directive says that the schools must utilise online, email, telephone or offline mediums, whatever is feasible, to conduct the examinations. The KMC has also asked the schools to publish the results of the exams within June 14 and start the new academic year within one week from June 14.

The statement has also mentioned that the notice for the city-wide examinations for Class 8 will soon be published.

Earlier, it had been reported that the though the new academic session is supposed to start by June 15, the Ministry of Science, Education and Technology was gauging the current situation brought about by the spread of the second wave of the coronavirus in the country.

The spokesperson of Ministry of Science, Education, and Technology, Deepak Sharma, had previously mentioned that the Education Act had been amended to start the new academic year from June 15 which has been published in the Nepal Gazette. He also mentioned that this information has already been shared with all the concerned stakeholders and that the ministry has not taken any decision regarding the new situation.

It remains to be seen now whether the new academic session will begin as stated earlier as Laxman Sharma, Chairperson of Nepal National Teachers Association, has said that given the current crisis brought about by the COVID-19 it is not possible to take admissions and start the new academic year from June 15. He also said that the problem is though teachers are ready to start online classes not all students in all the regions have access to the digital medium of learning.
