Anime has gained a lot of popularity and now almost everyone watches it today.
It is a specific style of cartoon produced and I, myself, am an anime lover.
So, when I heard about Kyubi;s kitchen from a friend, I knew I had to go there to try their food.
Kyubi’s kitchen, started back in 2018, is the first anime-themed restaurant located in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur.
The partners of Kyubi’s kitchen were anime lovers from the very beginning and decided to give structure to their love for anime and commenced Kyubi’s kitchen. This place is mainly inspired by the Naruto anime.
Prativa Thulung Rai, managing director of Kyubi’s kitchen explains, “We named our restaurant ‘Kyubi’s kitchen’ after a mythological character Nine-tailed beasts named Kurama (Kyubi) from the Naruto anime. As it is an anime themed restaurant, there is a misconception that we are a Japanese restaurant. While we do not serve Japanese cuisines we do focus on umami flavor of foods. Umami is one of the senses of the tongue.”
Then on the first floor there are two different rooms; dark room and light room. Dark room is the term inspired by the Uchiha clan (one of the four most notable clans in Naruto-verse), whereas light room is inspired from Hokage and is a tribute to all kages of the same anime.
After that, on the second floor there is an open space where you can enjoy hookahs with your friends. And at last there is a rooftop where you can enjoy the view of the city.
While I was so amazed by the whole theme of the restaurant, I was even more excited to try the anime themed food that I had only seen on the screen before.
So I decided to try to order three different dishes and two different desserts.
The first dish I had was their best selling food, Ichiraku ramen which is also inspired from Naruto anime.
It can be customized as one prefers it with a choice of pork broth, seaweed or miso soup with optional toppings of pork and chicken for meat lovers, and mushroom for vegans.
The broth was thick and creamy and the noodles were firm. All ingredients had a beautiful balance and one did not overpower the other.
The fresh spring onions added a crunch in the dish and the egg yolks added more flavor in it.
Rai explains, “The making of ‘Ichiraku ramen’ takes hard work as it takes a long time to cook the broth itself.”
The next dish came in, Don buri- a complete meal with chicken, and rice. The flavors in the dish just blew me away, the buttery rice and the crispy chicken was a perfect blend.
And the tare sauce was a cherry on top. The sweetness of the sauce complimented the dish beautifully.
Then I had Chibi tako, which is a stir fried baby octopus with butter garlic and special soy sauce with Korean noodles. The taste of chibi tako was sweet and salty at the same time. Whereas the Korean noodles added spice in the dish.
Though I am not a big fan of spicy food, I did not want to stop eating the noodles as the blend with chibi tako was so beautiful.
“Now we are focusing more on seafood like lobsters, and clams in our menu. Our seafood menu was all set up to go but due to the lockdown we had to hold it”, says Rai.
Then came the time for desserts, I had ordered their ‘Fried ice-cream’ and ‘Affogato ice-cream’.
And the fried ice-cream was full of surprises. While the outer layer of the ice cream was crunchy, the inside was creamy and cold.
And if you are a big fan of coffee then you would definitely like affogato ice cream.
Kyubi’s kitchen has plans to expand their franchise and reach out to more customers in the near future. However, they are happy for all the love and support they are getting from their customers and aspire to serve umami flavor foods in their every dish. And they also have cosplay theme on weekends.
