Cambodia's senior minister Ouch Borith has called for global actions to eliminate nuclear weapons.
Borith made the remarks at the High-Level Plenary Meeting to Commemorate and Promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons in New York, the United States, on Sept. 26, according to a statement of his speech released to the media on Wednesday.
He stressed the urgent need for all nations, including the nuclear weapon states (NWS), to engage in meaningful dialogue and demonstrate genuine commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty NPT.
"We must redouble our efforts towards our shared objective: a world free of nuclear weapons," Borith said.
"As a peace-loving nation, Cambodia along with fellow ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, firmly commits to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) and its plan of action," he added.
Borith concluded his remarks by expressing Cambodia's deep appreciation for the United Nations Secretary-General's policy brief on "A New Agenda for Peace" released in July 2023.
He said this brief sets the course for the international community to further strengthen multilateral efforts in maintaining international peace and security underpinned by international law.
