Crimes against women and children continue to be of great concern for the Fiji Police Force, as the July statistics show that the perpetrators were mostly male family members against female victims.
Among the cases, 79 percent were assault-related offences, and 21 percent were sexual offences, reported Fiji Broadcasting Corporation news website on Monday, citing the Fiji Police.
Fiji's acting Police Commissioner, Juki Fong Chew said on Monday that 50 percent of the incidents occurred between Saturday and Monday with 168 female victims recorded in July.
Police also noted a 24-percent reduction in crimes against women, while crimes against children decreased by 19 percent. Nine cases were domestic-related, according to the commissioner.
There were 140 child victims, and 41 percent of these incidents happened along the Suva-Nausori and Suva-Navua corridor.
