UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday appointed Maj. Gen. Patrick Gauchat of Switzerland as head of mission and chief of staff of the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), which was founded in 1948 for peacekeeping in the Middle East.
Gauchat succeeds Maj Gen Kristin Lund of Norway.
Gauchat brings 27 years of experience in working at national and international levels, including a military career serving his government and the United Nations in leadership positions, said Guterres' press office.
He was a senior military liaison officer at UN Headquarters in New York from 2014 to 2016 and deputy chief of staff of UNTSO from 2011 to 2013.
Gauchat was most recently head of the Swiss delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (2017-2021).
