Incidents of rape and sexual abuse are on the rise in Jumla.
According to figures released by Informal Sector Service Center INSEC Jumla, there have been nine incidents of rape and sexual abuse this year. Last year, there were eight incidents, including three cases of rape and five cases of sexual abuse. These incidents are mentioned in the Nepal Human Rights Year Book-2021.
From January to December 2021, there have been nine incidents, including four rapes and five sexual assaults. According to INSEC data, seven accused have been jailed for the incidents, while two juvenile correctional facilities and one fugitive have been jailed. Similarly, 17 incidents including one related to caste discrimination, two related to polygamy, one related to death after torture, one related to abduction, one related to murder and two related to economic, social and cultural rights have been collected during the period. Incidents related to education and right to food have also been collected, according to INSEC Jumla.
At the annual pre-review program of the Human Rights Year Book, Assistant Chief District Officer Nandaram Chaulagain suggested to give priority to the issues including flood and landslide damage as the year book would be effective. The procedure has been formulated only for the relief of paddy crop in case of flood damage. He said that there was a problem in other food crops as no procedure was formulated. The matter will be discussed in the District Disaster Management Committee to make it more public, said Chaulagain.
Buddhanarayan Sahani, chief of the Karnali branch of the National Human Rights Commission, Jumla, said that the increasing number of road accidents could be addressed. Road and road accidents cause a lot of financial loss. He said that it would be appropriate to include it in the year book as it is also a subject related to the state.
