Florists have said that 23 lakh 25 thousand indigenous garlands will be consumed on Tihar this year. According to Floriculture Association, up to 20 lakh hundred leaf, 3 lakh velvet and 25 thousand garlands of Godavari are consumed for Tihar.
"This year, it is estimated that 20 lakh hundred leaves, 3 lakh velvet and 25 thousand garlands of Godavari will be consumed for Tihar," said Min Bahadur Tamang, president of the association, "There has been an increase in the demand for flowers that have decreased due to covid. Nepal is 90 to 91 percent self-sufficient in Tihar flowers.
He said that around 300,000 garlands will be imported from India, which is insufficient according to the demand. "Traders also import garlands from India," he said.
This year, the production of flowers consumed for Tihar has increased by 10 to 20 percent, according to the association. The association says that the government has not even listened to the request to stop the import of Indian flowers.
In the year 078/079, Nepal imported flowers and floral products worth 36.5 million rupees. More than 43 thousand 500 human resources are directly and indirectly employed and dependent in flower business in Nepal.
