Around 400 households have been forced to live in the dark following the closure of a micro hydropower project in Myagdi district. Power production from the 30-KW Dajung Khola Micro Hydroelectricity Project has been suspended since September 30.
The project operated by the Dajung Khola Micro Hydropower Cooperatives Ltd is based in Malika Rural municipality-4 in Myagdi. As Cooperatives chair, Nanda Bahadur Gharti said the project was closed after faults were detected in the boring of the powerhouse turbine.
A total of 393 houses of Chyribot, Okharbot, Mahabhir, Chhap, and Khaten villages were dependent on the project for electricity. Now they have to seek the help of candles and traditional lamps for the light. Students attending online courses amidst COVID-19 risk have missed classes.
It is said it will take some time to fix the problem. According to Gharti, the area covered by the project service has no access to a central transmission line.
