Birendranagar is deserted due to the curfew imposed after the protest against the US aid project Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) escalated. After the curfew order was issued, various programs related to the Mahashivaratri festival were postponed and the Shiva temples are deserted.
Birendranagar has been deserted since this morning after the administration ordered security personnel to shoot people breaking the curfew if necessary. A meeting of the district security committee had decided to impose a curfew from Monday night to 7 pm today after protesters vandalized the party office and police post in Surkhet, and tried to set it on fire. Based on the decision of the committee, Chief District Officer Khagendra Prasad Rijal issued a curfew in the area of Dhuliabit in the east, Bangesimal in the west, Birendranagar Ward No. 7 in the north, and Latikoili Shiva Temple in the south.
A large number of policemen have been mobilized after the curfew was issued and the police have been miking and urging the public not to go out of their houses. The protesters had vandalized the offices of CPN (UML), Nepali Congress, and CPN (Maoist Center) on Monday evening and set fire to police posts at Mangalgadhi Chowk and Erichowk.
