The government has started giving 'booster' dose against coronavirus to senior citizens above 60 years of age.
Dr. Sameer Kumar Adhikari, Joint Spokesperson of the Ministry of Health and Population, informed that the booster dose has been started for the senior citizens above 60 years of age who have completed 6 months of vaccination against the virus. A ministerial meeting chaired by Health Minister Birodh Khatiwada on Friday sent letters to the District Health Offices of 77 districts for vaccination.
The ministry has started giving booster doses to senior citizens based on recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization and the National Vaccine Advisory Committee on January 26. The Ministry has decided to give Covishield or AstraZeneca vaccine to those who have been vaccinated with Covishield, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer or Vero Cell under the first and second dose.
It has also been requested to provide second dose of Covishield, AstraZeneca vaccines for the first dose of Covishield, AstraZeneca, Vero Cell, Moderna and Pfizer vaccines abroad. The ministry had provided booster doses to those working in the front line in the first phase from January 16. Till now, booster dose has been given to 299,000 people.
