Chief Minister of Bagmati Province, Shalikram Jammakattel, has urged farmers not to despair.
At a province level interaction organized by the fruits development project, CM Jammakattel vowed the provincial government would move ahead by keeping in mind the problems facing farmers.
He however said farmers were not interested in agriculture. The government is committed to launch programmes targeting upliftment of farmers. The work procedure on providing grants to individual farmers would be changed, the CM added.
"We are not self-reliant in fruits. Now, the new project will help make the country self-reliant," he said, adding that once farmers are facilitated on agricultural production and market management, they would be encouraged into this sector. Pocket area should be declared for specific fruits, he suggested.
Moreover, the CM informed that there would be an exemplary change in agriculture policy and programmes.
Fruit development project's director Rajendra Koirala said 100 local levels from five provinces will have fruit development projects with the joint support of ADB, World Agriculture and Food Security Programme, and Nepal government. The project will run till 2029.
Kiwi, avocado, apple, orange, lemon, picanut and other fruits will be produced under the project, Koirala added
