It has been demanded to declare March 13 as the day of history on the birth anniversary of Shiromani Baburam Acharya. The demand was made at a seminar on 'Baburam Acharya and His Contribution' organized in collaboration with Nepal Pragya Pratisthan and Itihas Shiromani Baburam Acharya Smriti Pratisthan on the occasion of Acharya's 135th birth anniversary. Presenting a working paper at the event, Dr. Govinda Tandon, a cultural expert, appreciated the contribution made by Baburam Acharya in writing authentic history of Nepal and demanded that his birthday be declared as History Day.
"Before Acharya, historians used to write genealogy as history. Acharya started writing authentic history. The world's highest peak in Nepal was named after a foreigner named Mount Everest Nepali.
Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Maheshwar Neupane informed that the government was preparing to give the award in the name of history leader Baburam Acharya from this year. He said that the award of Rs. 200,000 would be given every year to those who have contributed in the field of history, archeology and culture. As the committee has been formed for the selection of this award, it will be announced in a few days.
Secretary at the Ministry of Drinking Water Suresh Acharya recalled that he had offered the award when he was the head of the culture division of the Ministry of Culture. He informed that a democratic award in the name of BP and an award in the name of late Minister for Culture Rabindra Adhikari were proposed at that time.
The patriarch of the foundation Ganga Prasad Upreti said that the proposal to declare Baburam Acharya a national hero and establish an award was first put forward by the foundation. He said that the proposal to declare Acharya's birthday as a history day and it would be implemented on the advice of all concerned bodies. Vice-Chancellor of the Foundation, Dr. Jagman Gurung, said that Baburam Acharya had named the world's highest peak in the name of foreigners in 1856 BS. He was of the view that it would be appropriate to declare a history day in the name of such a person.
Former Minister Modnath Prashrita, Member Secretary of the Foundation Prof. Jagat Prasad Upadhyay, Prof. Dr. Surendra KC, Former Ambassador Niranjan Man singh Basnet, Prof. Dinesh Raj Pant, General Secretary of Baburam Acharya Memorial Foundation Baburam Acharya and others demanded to declare March 13 as History Day.
