The number of consumers consuming electricity across the country has reached 5.25 million. The total number of NEA customers alone has reached 4.7 million. Similarly, the number of community-side customers has reached 550,000.
In the first six months of the current fiscal year, the number of NEA customers has increased by 112,000. The total number of subscribers was around 5.1 million in mid-July last year. The number of consumers consuming electricity is gradually increasing. According to the latest data from across the country, about 92 percent of households have access to electricity. From this, the dream of bright Nepal expected by the government has gradually come true.
The government is working with the aim of providing electricity in different districts of Karnali within two years. The central transmission line has not yet reached Dolpa, Humla, and Mugu. NEA is working to make Surkhet, the capital of Karnali, the center to provide electricity in those districts. NEA has put forward a plan to spend additional Rs 25 billion to provide quality electricity service in Karnali.
According to NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising, the number of consumers consuming electricity has also increased in the last six months. At the meeting of the Ministry-level Development Problem Solving Committee, Executive Director Ghising said that the per capita electricity consumption has reached 325 kW by mid-December last year. According to him, an additional 300 MW of electricity has been consumed across the country in the last six months.
NEA currently has 2,132 MW of electricity available in the central system. The total financial progress of NEA during this period is 42.52 percent and the physical progress is 47.38 percent. But this is less than the goal. NEA had projected 64.33 percent financial progress and 59.63 percent physical progress in the first six months of the current fiscal year.
For the past four years, the work of the strategically important plan and transmission line has not been able to move forward due to pending cases in various courts including the Supreme Court. Ghising says that there is a problem in work due to the arrangements of cutting down trees and land acquisition for electricity poles.
