The government is preparing to make embossed number plates mandatory for government and private vehicles from Shrawan (mid-July). The Department of Transport Management has said that embossed number plates will be made compulsory for new vehicles and those that come for renewal of vehicle registration from Shrawan.

Director General of Department of Transport Management, Namraj Ghimire, informed that the embossed number plate for new and old vehicles is being made mandatory to scientifically manage the vehicles in the country. He added that the new system will be implemented for two-wheelers, four-wheelers and all other types of vehicles.

Ghimire also mentioned that preparations have already been made for service seekers to apply to avail the embossed number plates. He said that vehicles with old registration numbers will be asked to visit the department based on the vehicle lot number and the department has a target to affix embossed number plates on all vehicles within three years.

He added that when all the vehicles have the embossed number plate then the department will have data of all vehicles across the country at its central office. This will also make it easy for the security personnel to track vehicles that have been used for criminal purposes, he mentioned.

The embossed number plate will have a Radio Frequency Identification device embedded in it which will provide information on the location of the concerned vehicle. The device will also contain all the information about the respective vehicle.
