Farmers in Badamtar and Barfalyang areas of Rong have been taking up betel nut cultivation.
Farmers have started earning income by planting betel nuts in the fields and on the slopes. Betel nut farming does not affect other crops. Farmers in Rong, Chulachuli, Mai Municipality and the southern region of Mangsebung have been earning income by expanding their betel cultivation. Local Sant Bahadur Tamang said that almost all the families have started cultivating betel nut.
Traders have been coming to farmers' houses to buy betel nuts. Farmers have the experience of cultivating betel nut as a perennial crop and can produce up to 50 kilograms from a single plant. Farmers are involved in the expansion of betel nut cultivation as it does not damage vegetables and other crops, and provides shade. Farmers in the Chure area earn Rs 50,000 to Rs 200,000 annually by selling betel nuts.
