Finance minister meets MCC VP

Newly appointed Finance Minister Janardan Sharma has assumed office today.

Vice-President of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), Fatema Sumar, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Finance, Janardan Sharma.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Finance in Singha Durbar, the two discussed all aspects of the MCC project under which Nepal would receive USD 500 million in grants.

Minister Sharma told the visiting Vice-President of MCC that MCC was being discussed at the political level in Nepal. A press statement issued by the Ministry of Finance here said, “Discussions have been held at the political level about the compact held between the MCC and Nepal in 2017.”

Visiting Vice-President Sumar urged Minister Sharma for earliest ratification in the parliament and implementation, the press statement reads.

Fatima and her team have already held meetings with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Minister for Energy, Hydro Resources and Irrigation Pampha Bhusal, and coalition partner CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ yesterday.

The visiting team had also held a meeting with CPN (UML) Chairperson KP Sharma Oli, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairperson Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal (JSP) senior leaders on Thursday.

The MCC which forms partnerships with developing countries like Nepal for good governance, economic freedom, and investment in their citizens will assist Nepal in the construction of infrastructures such as 312 km road, 400 KV transmission line, and 77 km road from Bhalubang in Dang to Shivakhola.

Over Rs 50 billion will be invested in these projects in which the government of Nepal is chipping in Rs 12 billion.
