HoR meeting: Call for ending culture of organizing lockout at varsities

Lawmakers speaking in a session of the House of Representatives (HoR) expressed serious concerns over the undermining of the academic dignity and autonomy due to the ongoing lockouts carried out at the offices of office-bearers of various universities including at the Nepal Sanskrit University.

In the 'Zero Hour' of the meeting of the lower house of Federal Parliament today, lawmaker Bidya Bhattarai said the students have become despondent due to what she called the culture of lockout at universities and demanded that the government becomes serious on the matter.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Shyam Kumar Ghimire called on the government to become serious over the closure of 73 nursing colleges across the country due to the legal confusions.

Gyanendra Bahadur Karki of the same party urged the government to seek long-term solution to the problem of the erosion caused by the Koshi river by providing appropriate relief to the locals affected by the flooding caused by the river in Srilanka island of Sunsari district.

Binita Kumari Singh of Janamat Party called attention of the government to the lack of quality education in schools of the Tarai-Madhesh due to the shortage of teachers and adequate facilities.

Rastriya Swatantra Party's Sumana Shrestha called for stopping the appointment of university officials based on political power-sharing while Shishir Khanal of the same party demanded that the government inform the foreign nations about Nepal's political map through diplomatic channel.

Nepali Congress lawmakers Sita Kumari Rana, Sushila Shrestha, Santosh Chalise, Saraswoti Bajimaya, CPN (Unified Socialist)'s Sher Bahadur Kunwar, and UML's Sarita Bhusal and Shanti Chaudhary drew the government's attention on various contemporary issues.
