The history of the Shah King’s in Nepal is a story that would have different renditions and opinions on their time in power depending on who you ask about them. The dynasty that founded Nepal, unsurprisingly proves to have rather divisive opinions amongst the common public. However, one figure in this long list of rulers can unanimously be named as one of the most respectable and honoured King Nepal has ever had. King Birendra the 11th Ruler of the Shah Dynasty managed to impress an entire nation, scholars and foreign emissaries during his rule of the country.

From accounts of historians and those close to the Shah dynasty, King Birendra was described as one who wanted to spend every breathing moment of his for the betterment of his country and his citizens. Having gotten his early education from India, Birendra obtained his higher degrees from Uk and the USA. A highly learned man many remember King Birendra’s rule fondly, a tenure that consisted of many defining moments not only for himself but the entire nation.

The referendum he called in 1980 led to the abolition of the Panchayat system. Consequently in the year 1990, despite pressure from the judiciary and advisors, he met with the then influential leaders to officially establish the Multi-party system in Nepal.

He was met with a lot of backlash over the decision, going even as far as to him receiving Anti-Royal slogans during a swearing in ceremony of Prime Minister Chand. However he was unaffected and believed it was the best way for Nepal moving forward.

Soon enough in collaboration with the political parties he promulugated the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal, thus beginning the era of the constitutional monarchs in Nepal, one who would be below the constitution and abide by it.King Birendra

was truly a man of the people, having traveled all across Nepal in his youth, sometimes on foot, King Birendra was truly a man of the people, he understood the plight of his citizens and sympathized with them. Come any natural disaster or tragedy, king Birendra was an ever present figure at the site of the disaster overseeing the aid and rehabilitation of his people.

Outside of his royal duties King Birendra loved traveling abroad establishing diplomatic relations with many nations. He also loved painting, flying helicopters, parachuting and horse riding.

20 years have passed since the horrific demise of this beloved personality in the mysterious Royal Massacre. Even though the end moments of his life’s story were shrouded in mystery and grief, the King shall be remembered in the history books as one who was loved by all and one who loved all of them back, as one who truly understood the needs of the country and the potential it had.
