Mechinagar municipality has named roads after two martyrs of Jhapa.
The road connecting from Kakdavitta to Bahundangi to jirmele in Rong Rural Municipality of Ilam has been named as Martyr Bishwanath Ghimire Road, said Mayor Gopal Budhathoki. This 19 kilometers long road was earlier known as Mechi Corridor.
Similarly, the 15 km road connecting Ghodamara of Bhadrapur Municipality from Dhulabari through Jyamirgadhi has been named Martys Biren Rajbanshi road.
The two roads have been named by approving a special proposal in the Mechinagar Municipal Assembly held on Friday.
Biren was shot dead by the then Panchayati rulers on the pretext of moving him to the Ilam Jail from Chandragadhi in Jhapa in the Sukhani forest on the border of Jhapa and Ilam. Five leaders including Biren were killed in the incident. The government has honored him as a martyr and his family home is in Jyamirgadhi section of the same road.
Likewise, Martyr Ghimire is recognized as the first martyr of Jhapa. A Nepali Congress leader Ghimire was shot dead by the panchayat rulers.
Pankaj Ghimire, the grandson of martyr Ghimire, has expressed gratitude to the municipality for naming the road in appreciation of his grandfather's martyrdom for the cause of the democratic movement of Nepal.
