Parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress (NC) Gandaki province, Surendra Raj Pandey has been appointed the Chief Minister of Gandaki province.
Province Chief Prithvi Man Gurung on Thursday appointed Pandey the Chief Minister who had presented his claim to the post as per the Article 168 (2) of the Nepal Constitution and with support from 35 province assembly members.
Pandey, who was appointed the fourth chief minister of Gandaki province, had received support of 27 province assembly members from the NC, seven from the CPN (Maoist Centre) and from an independent province assembly member.
Also the central member of the NC, Pandey has established his image as a relentless fighter of the democratic movement in Nepal.
Pandey had been involved in the youth wing of the NC, the Nepal Student Union, since his student life. He has completed his Bachelor's Degree studies from the Tribhuvan University.
In course of his political struggle, he had spent jail life for over eight months, first in 2045 BS and second during the King's direct rule in 2061 BS. He was also detained several times in the struggle for democracy.
He had first obtained membership of NSU in 2036 BS and was elected the Free Student Union President of the Tri-Chandra Campus in 2045 BS.
He became the central member of NSU in 2049 BS and the central general secretary of Nepal Tarun Dal in 2059 BS. He has so far discharged the responsibility of NC central member three times and also took charge of the main opposition party leader of the NC in the province. Before this, he was a member of the National Assembly.
Pandey was elected the province assembly member from Gorkha constituency-2 (b).
After elected to the Chief Minister post, he expressed his commitment to collaborate with all sides and parties for the overall development of the province. ---
