The local governments in the Sindhupalchowk district have started the construction process for permanent shelters for those rendered homeless due to natural disasters.

The number of beneficiaries has reached 1,041 in various places of 12 local levels in the district prone to disasters like floods, landslides and soil erosion, according to the District Disaster Management Committee here.

Helambu rural municipality has the highest number of beneficiaries. A total of 392 households in the locality were displaced by the flood in Melamchi last year. Among them, 182 have been resettled in permanent shelters.

Similarly, 15 households have benefitted in Melamchi, 40 in Bahrabise 15 in Bhotekoshi rural municipality, two each in Paanchpokhari Thangpal rural municipality and Balefi rural municipality said Bednidhi Khanal, chief district officer of Sindhupalchowk.

Although the process to resettle disaster survivors has been taken forward, relocating those residing in the high-risk zone in the district is yet to get an impetus. Relocation of those affected by floods in the Yangri and Larkekhola rivers has not made any progress in a lack of arrangement of safer places, according to the District Administration Office, Sindhupalchowk.

Households in Yangri, Sunmaikharka, Bhangchung and Tipeni are at high risk of natural disasters. The District Disaster Management Committee, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and National Reconstruction Authority are to coordinate efforts for post-disaster operations such as relief packages, relocation, and resettlement among others.
