PM Oli inquires about glacial lake outburst and damages at Thame

 Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday inquired about the outburst of glacial lake and damages caused by subsequent flash flood in the Thame River of Solukhumbu district.

PM Oli obtained preliminary information about the incident occurred on August 16 and the aftermath of the outburst of lakes and flash flood from Minister of Defense, Manbir Rai, people's representatives and high-ranking officials of the concerned agencies.

Minister Rai and others briefed the PM about the incident at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar after the former conducted aerial inspection of Thame village in Pasang Lhamu rural municipality-5 in the district.

After acquiring information, PM Oli expressed commitment for the immediate actions to be taken by the federal government to respond to the disaster at Thame.

Present in the briefing were Minister Rai, parliamentarian Sonam Geljen Sherpa, Chief Secretary Leela Devi Gadtaula, Anil Pokharel, Chief of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and Mingma Tshiri Sherpa, and Chairperson of Pasanglhamu rural municipality, among others.

The team, in its report, pressed for prompt relief distribution and compensation to the flood victims as well as immediate restoration of electricity and communication services among other essential services. The report calls for detailed study of the damages caused by the flash flood and study the risk surrounding the glacial lakes outburst so as to devise reconstruction plan in the flood-hit area.

Over 17 houses and a school combined were damaged by the flash flood occurred after outburst of glacial lakes. According to the report, there were no human fatalities in the incident since early information system was enforced.

However, some local residents were reported to have sustained injuries in the disaster.
