Pokhara faces landslide amid heavy rainfall

A huge landslide occurred on the road at Mahendrapul in Pokhara on Sunday night due to heavy rains. Not only the roads but also the sidewalks have been washed away due to the floods and people living nearby are worried now. Mahendrapul is the  known as the business district of Pokhara. There are various private offices and establishments from financial institutions.

This is not the first landslide in Pokhara as the land is washed away every year. Sometimes in Nadipur, sometimes in New Road and sometimes in Mahendrapul area. When it rains a lot, it looks like a river flowing on the road which not only disrupt traffic but also cause panic among the locals. Experts say that even nearby houses could be at risk if the roadside collapse occurs.

Pokhara received 260 mm of rain in a period of 14 hours from 7 pm on Sunday to 9 am on Monday. According to Saroj Adhikari, weather assistant at the Water and Meteorological Office, Pokhara, heavy rain had started at 7 pm. He said that floods had hit the entire city of Pokhara when it rained overnight. According to him, this is the highest rainfall in the entire interval of the monsoon. He said that there is a possibility of heavy rain till Tuesday, which could lead to additional risk.

In the Mahendrapul area of ​​Pokhara, even in the previous year, there were occasional landslides. According to the technicians of Pokhara Metropolitan City, the damage has increased this time.

According to Netra Timilsena, sub-engineer of Pokhara Metropolitan City, it started raining on Sunday and due to the heavuy rainfall the damage is massive this time. The army said that the rain has made a big hole and it had gotten even bigger due to the flood overnight. "We have been trying to stay there until midnight after receiving information. But we also had to leave due to the danger of the situation. There was even more damage in the morning," he said.
