On behalf of President Bidya Devi Bhandari and through the Office of the Attorney General, the President's Office has submitted a written response to the Supreme Court regarding the Citizenship Bill.
The Secretary of the President's Office, Yadav Prasad Koirala, in his written reply sent to the Supreme Court on Tuesday stated that the work carried out in the interest and benefit of the nation cannot be said otherwise.
The government had withdrawn the old citizenship bill from the House of Representatives and the National Assembly and registered a new one to solve the citizenship problem. The bill was passed by a majority and sent to the President for certification. However, President Bhandari sent the bill back to the parliament.
The returned bill was again passed by the ruling coalition and sent for certification. But the President did not certify the bill within the mandatory 15 days, thereby nullifying the bill.
Claiming that the President's action was unconstitutional, a writ petition was filed in the Supreme Court on September 21.
